Without food sources, we can generally produce all of the Cholesterol we need. But with high dietary cholesterol in our diet, often found in animal foods, there could be a risk of high cholesterol, also known as hypercholesterolemia. This can greatly increase our risk for heart disease and stroke.

Lawenda, M.D.:  A question that I get asked frequently is does cholesterol in the diet increase the risk of cancer and the answer is probably not.  Most of the studies are now showing us that actually dietary cholesterol really has very little impact on the cholesterol that you measure in your blood stream.  So, I think a lot of people think that if you have high levels of blood cholesterol that is directly related to the food that you have in terms of high cholesterol foods and in fact we are starting to see that that’s not the case, that the amount of cholesterol that you are having in your food is not directly correlate to blood levels of cholesterol.

So, that’s actually something, that’s relatively new and something ever finding out in the number of different studies which sort of changing our prospective on nutrition recommendations.  We do know that when you do have higher levels of blood cholesterol, there is an increase risk of a variety of different cancers it appears.  However, this is you know something what we are still trying to tease this out to figure out exactly if that’s the case, but that really is not related to again as I mentioned the diet.

It is probably related to other things in terms of systemic inflammation which in itself can lead to high levels of blood cholesterol and we know systemic inflammation is a factor that is associated with fueling, the development and growth of cancers.  So, sort of in summary, I don’t believe that it’s dietary cholesterol that is related to risks of cancer.
