Jay K Harness, MD, FACS: Well, this is a very stressful time.  You have just been newly diagnosed with breast cancer and I really understand and feel the kind of stress and anxiety and terror frankly that I know is going through you right now as a newly diagnosed patient and this video is designed to help not only what you know that we know what you are going through, but also to explain the process to you.

One of the things you are going to hear me say time and time again is time is our friend.  This cancer while it is newly diagnosed for you has actually been there for months and in some cases even years and we have been in an era, thank goodness, for several years now of what is called personalized breast cancer care.  Meaning your case is going to be treated individually.  One size does not fit all, but the process to understand what is going to be right for you takes time.

As a newly diagnosed patient, more likely than not, we may need additional imaging studies including the breast MRI examination.  Your case will be presented to our weekly multidisciplinary breast cancer conference.  You will be needing and interacting with a breast navigator and you will be meeting and interacting with multiple other people.

The bottom line of this whole process is to come up with an individualized plan that is not only correct for you from a medical perspective, but also one that fits your emotional needs and will be talking a lot more about all the different aspects of where we need to go with your diagnosis.
So please understand that we know where you are at.  We are providing this kind of information, there is an introduction to me and to the process here with the breast program and I look forward to working with you, your family, and all of your loved ones.
